When
I wrote Help Your Dog Fight Cancer,
I hoped
it would reach people who were determined, as I was for Bullet, to
give their dogs with cancer a chance to survive. The response has been
overwhelming.
I love that so many
people now know my Bullet. I love that his book is helping people and
dogs fighting cancer. I hate that there are so many dogs with
cancer.
The thousands of
copies sold are an indication of the overwhelming statistics. Canine
cancer is affecting millions of dogs at this moment. I
am haunted
by
thoughts of all of the people who have dogs with
cancer but who cannot afford treatment. After completing the first
printing of Help
Your Dog Fight
Cancer in 2004,I founded the Magic Bullet Fund to help
these people and their dogs. My donations (a portion of
proceeds from the book) were the first influx to the fund and they
continue although now they are dwarfed by the generous donations of so
many others.
By
the second printing of this book in 2005, Bullet had left me, taken by
old age,
still cancer free. On the first anniversary of his departure, the
Magic Bullet Fund began to accept dogs into the program to help them
through treatment. The fund provides financial assistance, guidance in
diet and supplement and home care, and emotional support.
AT best, the
fund gives dogs a chance to beat cancer.
AT least, the fund
allows caretakers to have a long goodbye with their beloved friend.

VIN Book Review
Canine and Feline Geriatric Oncology
by Greg Upton, DVM
Houston, TX
When I first agreed to do
review this book, I did so with some trepidation. Quite frankly, I
didn't expect to gain much from spending the time to read it. I could
not have been more wrong.
This is a book
that should be read, and not just used as quick reference. In my
opinion, it should be required reading for current veterinary students
and highly recommended for all companion animal practitioners.
The
authors have made me rethink how I approach cancer patients and their
owners. They have helped me, my patients, and my clients.
